Although a solar water heating system may initially cost more than a conventional heater, it will more than pay for itself over time through substantial energy savings. With incentives, your solar water heating system could pay for itself in the first year!
Solar water heating systems are an important step toward individual energy independence. They work well in any climate, using free, clean sunshine as their fuel source. A solar water heating system will save you money immediately and protect you from rising energy costs for years to come. The systems are easily integrated into your existing system, making installation and set up a breeze.
Every solar water heating system consists of two main parts: solar collectors (or panels) that use the warmth of the sun to heat water, and storage tanks that collect the hot water generated by the collectors.
There are two types of solar water heating systems, each with their own benefits. Active systems, which use circulating pumps and controls, and passive systems, which use gravity, water pressure and the tendency of hot water to rise above cold.
Active systems can be further broken down into two circulation types:
• Direct, or Open Loop Circulation - Household water is circulated directly through the collectors and into the home. These systems work well in warmer climates where it rarely freezes.
• Indirect, or Closed Loop Circulation - A non-freezing, heat-transfer fluid is pumped through the collectors and into a heat exchanger. This exchanger (located within the storage tank) heats the household water that flows into the home. These systems work well in cold climates prone to freezing temperatures.
